Frances (Woodcock) MeVay, “Frani,” 65, died Saturday, ,March 1, 2014 at her home following a struggle with cancer. She was the wife of James Charles Francis MeVay.
Born in Stamford, Conn., a daughter of the late Robert Bell Woodcock and Frances (Bennett) Woodcock, she spent her youth in Norwalk and Darien, lived in Old Greenwich for many years, and Westport, Mass., for the past seven years. She and her family summered in Little Compton.
Mrs. MeVay was a graduate of The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, NY, Class of 1966, and served as class agent for many years. She was also a graduate of Bennett College in Millbrook, NY, class of 1968, where, as president of the Student Association, she organized student protests for better academics.
She was a homemaker and active volunteer, giving much of her time to Call-A-Ride of Greenwich and serving on the board and as chair of the Junior Sailing Association of Long Island Sound. Pursuing her interests in art history and antiques, she had worked in glass and china, consignments and fine jewelry at different points in her life.
Mrs. MeVay’s love of the ocean drew her to the water often. Away from the shore, she found delight in Westport’s landscape and wildlife. She was a past member of the Indian Harbor Yacht Club and Riverside Yacht Club in Connecticut, Warren’s Point Beach Club in Little Compton, and Elephant Rock Beach Club in Westport. During her time at Riverside Yacht Club, she was co-chair of the Junior Sailing Committee, Lady of the Year in 1998 and Governor, Class of 2001.
She joyfully supported her family in their pursuits of auto racing, sailing and horseback riding, calling herself the “Crew Chief.” She will be remembered for her selfless, giving kindness, but even more, her sense of humor and wit that could turn even the worst day bright.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, one son, Alex Craige Haviland MeVay of Boston; one daughter, Adriane MeVay Graham and her husband Russell “Kip” Graham Jr. of Stamford, Conn.; one sister and one cousin.
