Born in Derry, Donemana, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, he was the son of the late Edward and Beatrice (Fadden) Dolan. He was educated at Killenagh Primary School, Donemana, Strabane and St Columb’s College, Derry. He was ordained on Dec. 21, 1958 at St. Columban’s Seminary, Dalgan Park, by Most Rev. John A. Kyne, Bishop of Meath.
He was appointed to Korea in 1959. After studying the Korean language in Seoul, he was appointed to Kwangju Vicariate in 1960 and became an assistant pastor in Cheju City. After further language studies, he became a parish priest at Chindo, Korea, but almost immediately was stricken with meningitis and returned to Ireland.
After a year’s recuperation, he came to the USA to do parish work in the Diocese of St. Augustine FL. Three years later, the Columbans in the U.S. appointed him first to Houston, Texas, then to Milton, Mass., for mission promotion. Fr. Dolan was assigned to St. Columbans, Nebraska, where he headed the Columban Mission Office for 22 years, then became the Columbans Director of Planned Giving for a further 10 years until his retirement in 2004.
While stationed in Nebraska, he became active in World-Wide Marriage Encounter. Fr. Dolan moved to St. Columban’s, Bristol in 2011.
He is survived by two brothers, Monsignor Leo Dolan of San Antonio, Texas, and Albert Dolan of Belfast, Northern Ireland.
His funeral services were held April 25 with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at the Columban Fathers Chapel. Main Celebrant for the Mass was Rev. Chuck Lintz SSC and the Homilist was Rev. Joseph McSweeney SSC. Serving as con-celebrants were Rev. John Hogan SSC, Rev. John Burger SSC, Rev. John Moran SSC, Rev. Bob O’Rourke SSC, Rev. A. Sueper SSC, Rev. John Buckley SSC. Rev. William Sweeney SSC, Rev. Frank Grady SSC, Rev. Vincent Youngkamp SSC, Rev. Frank Carroll SSC, Rev. William Sulliva SSC, Rev. Daniel McGinn SSC, Rev. John Marley SSC, Rev. Brian Gallagher SSC, Rev, Bernard Toal SSC, Rev. David Padrnos SSC, Rev. Richard Pankratz SSC, Rev. Sal Caputo SSC, Rev. Gregory Stowe SSC.
Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bristol. Memorial donations may be made to Columban Fathers, 65 Ferry Road Bristol, RI 02809. Arrangements are by the George Lima Funeral Home.
