Born and raised in Westport, he was a lifelong resident of the town. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a self-employed commercial fisherman.
Mr. Smith was a member of the former Westport Volunteer Fire Department and the Shellfish Advocacy Board. He was a bass player in a bluegrass band that played locally and started the Wednesday Night Jam Sessions at the Westport Point Wharf. Mr. Smith was co-owner of both Westport Lobster Co. and Noquochoke Orchard of Westport. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his son, Dale A. Smith of Westport; his daughter, Sherry Lynne Smith of California; two brothers, Herbert E. Smith and George E. Smith, both of Westport; two sisters, Carolyn Langlois of Dartmouth and Doris E. Mills of Westport; three grandchildren, Ryan, Lauren and Allison; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Lee Anne Smith and the former husband of the late Barbara (Simmons) Smith.
