Bristol fire and rescue recovered the body of a woman who jumped off the Mt. Hope Bridge at around 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The woman’s name has not been released, however police confirmed that she was a 79-year-old Bristol resident.

Police received a call from a motorist who was on the bridge, reporting that they saw an elderly woman exit her car on the span and leap over the railing into the choppy water below.

Rescue crews and public safety officials from Bristol, Portsmouth and Roger Williams University immediately responded and observed the body in the water, approximately 200 yards west of the bridge. When Bristol’s Marine 1 arrived, they directed the crew to the area where they recovered the body.

A rescue team waited at Church Street dock, however it appeared that no attempt was made at resuscitation. The woman was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

It always saddens me to hear stories about people ending their lives because they could not think of any other way to end their pain or sadness. My heart goes out the to family members and friends of this lady. God Bless.

I cannot imagine the despair which would drive someone to think this is the best solution.

It is sad that her life came to this point.
