Joe Collins of Westport says volunteering with the Buzzards Bay Coalition is a great way to support improvements to Buzzards Bay. Because of his dedication and commitment, Joe was honored as volunteer of the year at the Coalition’s annual meeting this summer.
Mr. Collins began volunteering with the Coalition seven years ago at the first Buzzards Bay Watershed Ride.
“Once I got involved, I realized this was a great organization to protect the environment, and I wanted to invest my time here,” he said.
Now Mr. Collins volunteers frequently with the Coalition. He serves as an educational docent on Friday mornings in the Richard C. Wheeler Bay Learning Center in New Bedford and assists at events throughout the year.
“I find it interesting to learn about all the things the Coalition does” and to share that information with people who visit the Learning Center, he said.
Mr. Collins said his favorite event is still the Watershed Ride. His efforts that day take him around a large portion of Buzzards Bay, from his home in Westport all the way to Quissett Harbor in Falmouth.
The Coalition depends on volunteers like Mr. Collins to help run events, educate the public, and more. Those interested in volunteering with the Coalition can visit the website at www.savebuzzardsbay.org to find out ways to get involved.
