Westport weathers nippy December

December was chilly in Westport, with temperatures averaging a bit below normal 36.1 degrees for the month, according to statistics kept at Walter Quinn’s Cherry and Webb Lane weather station.

The warmest reading (58 degrees) came on Dec. 22, while the coldest (16.1 degrees) was on Dec. 14.

Melted precipitation (most of it fell as rain) totaled 4.88 inches. More than half of that fell during two storms — 1.32 inches on Dec. 15, and 1.41 inches on Dec. 29. There were no major snowstorms.

Winds for the month averaged 7.8 m.p.h. and the peak gust of 35 m.p.h. from the west northwest was recorded on Dec. 16 at 9 a.m.
