Westport seeks new animal control officer

WESTPORT — Concerns about conflict of interest have prompted Westport to seek someone new to fill the job of animal control officer.

That post is now held by Donna Lambert who took the job on a temporary basis earlier this year.

But last week, the Board of Selectmen decided that a new animal control officer should be hired since the present arrangement seems to conflict with town bylaws.

Those bylaws state that the animal control officer reports to and is supervised by the town’s Board of Health. Ms. Lambert is one of three present members of the Board of Health so effectively reports to herself.

As a result, the Board of Health is seeking applicants for the post that has lacked a permanent employee since 2010. Possibilities discussed last week included hiring one full-timer and having one or two part-timers on call when the regular officer is off duty.

The Board of Health will screen applications and pass on its recommendation to the Selectmen for a final decision.

Ms. Lambert will keep the job until a replacement is found.
