PORTSMOUTH — The R.I. Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) is considering an application from a local man to construct a 1.4-acre oyster farm just north of Spectacle Island in Blue Bell Cove.

Russell Sousa, of 355 Riverside St., wants to build and maintain 13 rows of eight cages that would be located about 100 feet off the shoreline of Spectacle Island.

The oyster farm would be about 470 feet off the Hummocks shoreline and about 700 feet from an existing shellfish farm owned by Dave McGhie.

The proposed farm is away from boat traffic, on the side least traveled by recreational users and is protected by storms, according to the application.

According to CRMC’s notice, this is a modified application that moves the farm farther off Spectacle Island.
