Warren ranks 8th in per capita violent crime statewide

Warren Police Sgt. Michael Marcello answers a call on his radio.

Warren is a safe place — relatively speaking.

The bayside town tucked between Barrington and Bristol ranks eighth statewide in a recent ranking of incidences of violent crime per capita in Rhode Island. Little Compton and Richmond tied for last place, with zero violent crimes last year, while Central Falls ranked first with 142 in a population of less than 20,000.

The numbers were compiled by the FBI as part of its 2012 federal crime statistics. According to the report, Warren had 19 cases of violent crime last year, including two forcible rapes, seven robberies and 10 aggravated assaults. Placing ahead of Warren, with higher instances of crime, were mostly urban centers including Providence, Pawtucket, Newport and Warwick.
