You wouldn’t think that working in a fast food restaurant would bring notoriety and acclaim. But for Laurie Furtado, that’s exactly what it did.
Ms. Furtado was recently named McDonald’s Restaurant “Crew Person of the Year” for 2012 after beating out eight other challengers — and 50,000 other employees from 750 franchise locations — in the chain’s Northeast region, made up of New England and New York. She’s been employed at the McDonald’s on Metacom Avenue in Warren for six years. The Crew Person of the Year Award honors the top crew member in each of McDonald’s 22 U.S. Regions.
Ms. Furtado, who previously lived in Bristol, was recognized for providing quality service with cleanliness and value above and beyond what was expected of her. But, as she explained, it goes far beyond that.
“People ask me all the time why I love my job so much and I tell them, ‘It’s because of my customers,’” she explained. “They are the most important thing to me. I’ve met so many wonderful people during my time here in Warren. My manager and fellow employees are great to work with. It’s one big happy family here.”
Initially, Ms. Furtado knew she had been nominated for this honor, but didn’t think much about winning after that.
“I was really surprised that I had been nominated,” she said. “But to win, was a real shock.”
Ms. Furtado previously worked at the former Linden Gate Flowers in Bristol.
