A new exhibit at the George Hail Library offers a window on what holiday greetings were like a century ago.
A collection of Christmas postcards, delivered to Warren resident Mary DeWolf between 1908 and 1912, was recently donated to the library by John Chaney of the Massasoit Historical Association. He got them from an Iowa woman who descends from Ms. DeWolf.
The cards show traditional Christmas scenes and even some modern (for the early 1900s) touches, including St. Nick talking to a young girl on the telephone. Back then, you didn’t necessarily need a street address to deliver a postcard. They’re addressed to “Mary DeWolf, Warren RI,” and delivery cost a penny.
The cards are on display at the library through the holiday season.
