Having been unable to find a buyer, Warren is looking at a possible new use for the Liberty Street School: Municipal offices.

Warren Town Planner Caroline Wells said Friday that there have been discussions about moving some of Warren Town Hall’s more crowded offices into the old high school. It’s just talk at this point, she said, but there’s definitely a need.

“There are a few offices that could use more space,” she said, mentioning her office and that of Warren Building Official Bill Nash, among others.

The building contains asbestos and needs extensive renovations. One of the main deterrents to converting it into office space is the cost of renovating and maintaining it; that cost has also complicated efforts to find a private buyer over the past several years.

Most recently, the town council last month rejected two bids to take over the property, both submitted by Warren residents. No fewer than three proposals for the school have been entertained but ultimately rejected over the past several years.
