The lots, located at 205 and 211 Thames St., have an unoccupied two-family home on each site. The house at 205 Thames St., was built in 1900, has 1,826 square-feet of waterfront land, and is valued at $261,240. The second house at 211 Thames St., was built in 1880, has 5,510 square-feet of waterfront land, and is valued at $350,960.
The properties are adjacent to the Ever-Ready Fire Company.
The closing took place on Thursday, Aug. 15 after four months of negotiation between Town Administrator Tony Teixeira, Town Treasurer Julie Goucher, and the property owner Antonio Azevedo of Providence.
The town has had its eye on the properties for years, said Mr. Teixeira, and it has been in discussion during executive session with the town council.
“It was a team effort,” Mr. Teixeira said of the negotiations, “with a lot of support from the council.”
The town’s interest in the property is largely its location, with town-owned property to the south to Robin Rug, and the proximity of the State Street dock to the north. Now only two other properties stand between town-owned property and State Street on the west side of Thames.
The money to buy the properties will come from a combination of open space and town funds, Mr. Teixeira said, with assurances that the land will remain open to the public.
Although the town has no immediate plans for the newly purchased property, Mr. Teixeira said that with the Riparian rights there may be opportunities for additional dockage options.
“We’re going to get a return for our dollar,” Mr. Teixeira said. “This is an ideal situation.”
