Tiverton residents take action against tolls

TIVERTON — Area residents are forming a committee called Tiverton  ‘STOP ‘ (Sakonnet Toll Opposition Platform ) to halt the placing of tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge.
Tiverton’s initial STOP  meeting will be on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, at 6:30 pm,in  Tiverton Town Hall, 343 Highland Road. The meeting is open to all.
The committee is asking all interested residents to attend and be involved in this effort to prioritize, plan strategy and become joined with other East Bay communities opposed to the Sakonnet Bridge tolls.

  1. I can’t imagine the business that will be lost in Porstmouth,Middletown ,and surrounding communities both ways 4.00 one way and back 8.00 total that is unbelievable !!’I will be there!!! The towne hall should be packed!!!!

  2. Bridge toll suggestion: As Easy Pass will be used on the bridge, why not give Tiverton and Portsmouth residents an additional reduced rate. There is already a reduced rate for all Easy Pass RI residents on the Newport bridge. I’m sure making the billing change isn’t that difficult. It’s only about $21 for a transponder. If you don’t have a transponder and are billed by mail, it should be easy to give the same additional reduced rate to Tiverton and Portsmouth registered vehicles. Put the toll lanes on the bridge or as close as possible and this would prevent people from bypassing the toll and causing traffic problems on roads not designed for heavy use. This would be a reasonable compromise if tolls are implemented.
