Tiverton fire department offers extinguisher training

With the same type of equipment now used by the Tiverton fire department, a BullEx Co.volunteer simulates training in how to extinguish an engine fire.

TIVERTON — A $10,000 donation to the Tiverton Fire Department by the Tiverton Power Company has enabled the department to purchase a piece of equipment that can benefit anyone in town who owns a fire extinguisher.

Many businesses with fire extinguishers in their buildings are required to have extinguisher training, and many others probably should have the training, says Dan Murphy, a Tiverton firefighter and paramedic who also serves as the town fire marshal.

Mr. Murphy, a 16-year veteran with the department, is also the only member of the department who conducts training in how to operate a fire extinguisher. The new town equipment is a BullEx I.T.S. Extreme extinguisher trainer.

It’s a system that consists of a training-level fire extinguisher and a series of props that run on propane and are set on fire for practice. The trainee tries to put out the blaze using the training extinguisher under the guidance of Mr. Murphy.

Props can include a trash can, an electric motor, a paint locker, and a pan on a stove. Combustibles simulate flammable liquids, paper and wood products, and electrical equipment.

Mr. Murphy said the training involves real flames. If the trainee does things right, the fire will go out. If not, the practice flames can be turned off.

Mr. Murphy  said he has provided training thus far with the new equipment to a group home on King Road and to the Tiverton Power Company. He says he conducts two dozen or so training sessions annually.
