This weekend’s performance of “The Wizard of Oz” at Barrington High School will be full of surprises.

For starters, people in the audience may be alarmed when they notice some members of the school’s faculty acting out parts on stage. Theater teacher Stephanie Spaziano, who will direct the play, said a few members of the high school’s English department are filling roles in the show.

“They’re all in the cyclone,” Ms. Spaziano added.

This weekend’s “Oz” will also feature a real dog playing the role of Toto. Barrington High School student Arielle Sztulman will play Dorothy, while her real-life dog, Morgan, will see plenty of stage-time, too.

“She’s so excited to be with us,” Ms. Spaziano said of Morgan. “When she gets to the school (for rehearsal) she gets really excited.”

The play will also feature some integration with film. Barrington High School students have a morning news show called the Sunrise Show, and part of that production relies on a green screen. High school teacher John West, who oversees the Sunrise Show, offered the green screen to the Stagemasters for the production.

Ms. Spaziano said the audience should expect a play that is “pretty much verbatim to the MGM version” of “The Wizard of Oz.” She said the play will be fun for all ages and family-friendly, and emphasized how much of a school-wide effort the production will encapsulate.

“The show really has been a community effort on the part of BHS with faculty members contributing their time and talent,” she wrote in a recent e-mail.

She said the team approach is a staple for the Stagemasters. She said her cast and crew often spend time together off-stage, just hanging out. She said that in addition to the rehearsals, the Stagemasters have met for viewings of “Return to Oz.”

“We’re eating popcorn and having fun,” she said. “We are a team, and we work together too. We all work together for a common goal … to put something on for the community.”
