Barrington police were out in force at the high school during prank day, but the hallways were pretty quiet.

Instead, officers found themselves busy on Friday, May 31, with one student who allegedly sped his car out of the parking lot and nearly struck a school official in the process. At about 8 a.m., an officer on patrol at the school noticed a boy walking from the building and asked him if he was supposed to be in class. The boy allegedly told the officer that he didn’t need to be there, and then fled from the parking lot in his car. According to police, the boy’s vehicle nearly struck an administrator while leaving the lot.

Police then tracked down the vehicle to an address on Maple Avenue. But by the time officers arrived at the home, an older man had already come out of the house and “looked angry.” The man, 54-year-old Donald Masi of 431-B Maple Ave., allegedly yelled at the officers and said he was tired of the local police picking on his son. Mr. Masi was reportedly waving his arms and swearing at the officers, while his son, 17, also began yelling at the officers.

Police tried to calm down Mr. Masi, but the local man allegedly continued to verbally berate officers. Police said Mr. Masi also began to stand very close to officers in an apparent attempt to intimidate them. Mr. Masi also told police he wanted them to get off his property.

Eventually officers attempted to arrest Mr. Masi for disorderly conduct, but when one officer, Patrolman John J. Sgagliardich, went to put handcuffs on him, Mr. Masi’s teenage son jumped on the policeman’s back. Patrolman Sgagliardich was able to push the 17-year-old away, and other officers put the boy under arrest.

Police charged Mr. Masi with obstructing an officer in the execution of duty and disorderly conduct (fighting/tumultuous behavior), and his son with simple assault or battery, disorderly conduct, and obstructing an officer in the execution of duty.
