The plight of the local trout population, especially the endangered salter trout, will be the topic of a talk by Steve Hurley of the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife.
His talk will be on December 12, 2012, at 1 p.m. at the Horseneck Point LifeSaving Station. It is being cosponsored by the Westport River Watershed Alliance and the Westport Fishermen’s Association.
“There is local concern regarding the status of the salter trout population as well as the health of their habitat,” said the talk’s sponsors. The towns of Westport and Dartmouth contain the largest number of streams that support salters, also known as sea-run brook trout, and there are potential threats to these populations.
These trout spend months at sea before returning upstream to spawn.
All are welcome to join the discussion of the status of local brook trout and what might be done to insure their survival.
