SweetSisters bakery set for weekend debut in Tiverton

TIVERTON — They aren’t sisters, exactly, more like the sister neither had.

So SweetSisters seemed a good name for the Tiverton bakery that best friends Amy Paull and Deirdre Mazzeo are opening this Friday at 14A Stafford Road in Tiverton.

Over time, “we have become the very best of friends, she is the godmother to my children and rightfully so, not having any biological sisters, we refer to each other as sister. Hence our name — SweetSisters,” Ms. Paull said.

She grew up in Tiverton, graduated from Tiverton High School (Class of 2000) and lives there with her family. After high school she graduated from Johnson & Wales University with a culinary arts degree. Ms. Mazzeo lives in Seekonk, graduated from Our Lady of Fatima High School in 2002 and then  St. Joseph’s College in Maine where she earned a degree in psychology.

They met working with children at SouthCoast Educational Collaborative in Seekonk, learning along the way that baking, which they both love, was a good way to reach out to the youngsters in their care.

Although this is their first actual bakery, they’ve actually been building the business for about three years from home. Starting by supplying cakes, cupcakes and other treats to friends, and then doing local artisan shows, fairs and festivals, they go into this venture with a word-of-mouth customer base who look to them for all manner of baked goods for special occasions.

Their new bakery, which was formerly home to Sweet Retreat, comes fully equipped with the ovens and other equipment they’ll need to turn out the wide range of baked goods they have in mind.

“We will have a good variety,” Ms. Paull said, “but our focus will be on quality over quantity … We will rotate our offerings with the idea of having new surprises.”

They specialize in special occasion custom  cakes and cupcakes — “birthdays, anniversaries, weddings” — and will regularly offer cookies, cinnamon buns, gourmet candy apples, malasadas on Sundays, bakery pizzas, and, before long pies and more.

Asked to pick her favorite thing to bake, Ms. Paull answered “Everything really, but cinnamon rolls are a personal favorite, a a lemon poppy seed roll … Deirdre is primarily the cake girl — she is an outstanding cake decorator too.”

Opening weekend is this Friday through Sunday, March 1-3.

Thereafter they will be open Wedneday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
