Police from Portsmouth and Tiverton were chasing the runaway blue Honda Civic when they crossed into Westport at about 2:45 p.m. on Route 177 (American Legion Highway), said Westport detective Anthony Cestodio.
Westport police joined in the chase as the Honda fled east with one flat tire. The car tried to turn onto Route 88 south but the driver lost control and struck a Massachusetts state highway sign.
The two occupants, both men, were taken into custody immediately after the crash. Both were transported to Charlton Memorial Hospital by the Westport Fire Department for treatment of minor and later released into police custody.
The driver, River M. Ahlquist, 18, of 1304 Eddie Dowling Highway, Lincoln, RI, was charged with receiving stolen property over $250, refusing to stop for a police officer, operating to endanger, and unlicensed operation.
His passenger, Earl S. Dandy, 18, of 18 Washington Ave., Providence, was charged with receiving stolen property over $250, and was also arrested on an outstanding default warrant out of Attleboro Court for shoplifting and providing a false name andSocial Security number.
Detective Cestodio said that the two will likely also face charges from Rhode Island regarding the car theft and pursuit there.
