BRISTOL — The Portsmouth High School varsity girls’ soccer team will play an exhibition game against Newtown High School (Conn.) this Saturday, Oct. 5.
The game is part of the team’s ongoing fund-raising efforts in memory of the victims of the Sandy Hook school shooting in December 2012.
The exhibition game will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at Roger Williams University. Although it’s an exhibition, the game should prove to be a good one as it will feature two Division 1 teams.
Before the game the Patriots will present a monetary donation to the Newtown International Center for Education, a parent and community organization that supports teacher scholarships and professional development to bring resources to their classrooms.
The PHS team also hopes to raise some additional funds from the game.
Anyone who would like to contribute to the donation should make a check out to the PHS Athletic Boosters Club and write “Newtown Soccer” in the subject line. The mailing address is PHS Athletic Boosters Club, PO Box 438, Portsmouth, RI 02871. Contributions are tax-exempt donations (the tax ID number is 46-0578959.)
The Newtown girls’ team will be hosted at no charge by the Newport Harbor Hotel for the weekend, and will also enjoy sightseeing events in Newport.
PHS girls’ soccer coach Jim Blaess said the players first expressed the desire to organize a charitable event in memory of the Newtown victims during the off-season.
