Small plane crashes on Cuttyhunk, pilot killed

Massachusetts State Police report that a small plane has crashed on Cuttyhunk Island at the end of the Elizabeth Islands, across Buzzards Bay from Westport. The plane reportedly struck a tree near a small dirt/grass landing strip on the island’s west side, and the pilot, a Delaware man, was killed.

The 11:31 a.m. bulletin and later updates state:

At this time Massachusetts State Police from Troop D are headed to Cuttyhunk Island for reports of a small plane crashing down onto the island … (update) –The crashed plane is being described as a 1965 fixed-wing Maule Bee Dee M-4-210. The FAA and Massachusetts Aeronautics Commission have representatives enroute to the crash site for the investigation. The only occupant is the pilot.

UPDATE - The pilot in this morning’s small plane crash on Cuttyhunk Island was determined to be deceased on scene. He is a 70-year-old Wilmington, Delaware, resident. He was the sole occupant of the plane.  He was later identified as Allen P. Spaulding Jr., 70, of WilmingtonDelaware. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing by the State Police, the United States Coast Guard, the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board, and the Massachusetts Aeronautics Commission.
