Shark sighting shuts down Westport beaches

Horseneck Beach

Officials shut down Horseneck Beach and Gooseberry Island in Westport along with Demarest Lloyd State Beach in Dartmouth after a fisherman reported seeing two sharks.

William Hickey, a spokesman for the state Department of Conservation and Recreation, said the sighting off Gooseberry Island prompted the closing of Horseneck, Gooseberry and Demarest Lloyd to bathers, according to SouthCoast Today.

Beaches will remain closed for swimming for the remainder of today and are scheduled to reopen Thursday. Signs have been posted and lifeguards have made announcements about the shark sighting.

Lt. Dan Richard, Massachusetts state police spokesman, released a tweet informing the public.
