The students, all gardening with the district’s Child Opportunity Zone program, planted tomatoes, peppers, peas, green beans and more in a courtyard in the middle of the Hugh Cole grounds this spring. Following the seedlings along ever since, different groups of students, usually eight at a time, have spent the summer tending the gardens while learning about botany, recycling, composting and food production. Now that it’s harvest time, the daily afternoon trips to the school are becoming more fun, as the kids get to pick. All the food grown goes to St. Michael’s Church in Bristol.
“The kids love it, and they’ve learned so much,” said volunteer Ginny DePasquale.
