Riverside MMA fighter Cormier vies for middle school boosters

UNCASVILLE, CONN. — Riverside native Dan Cormier is among the fighters on the first card of 2013 at the Mohegan Sun Casino arena Saturday night, Jan. 5. Cormier is scheduled to face Kody Nordby in a flyweight bout in the North American Grappling Association’s Reality Fighting: A Night of MMA Fights New Years Bash. The card begins at 8 p.m.Cormier_1
A product of the East Providence School System and a wrestler during his days in middle school and high school, Cormier has a 4-3 record in seven career mixed martial arts fights. Cormier stands 5-feet-4, weighs 125 pounds and trains out of the Tri-Force MMA gym. Nordby measures and weighs the same as Cormier, but brings an unblemished 4-0 record in the event.
Of note as well from Cormier, he will be donating a portion of his purse to the East Providence Middle School Athletic Boosters Club, which is attempting to raise money towards reimplementing sports programs at Riverside and Martin Middle Schools.
Cormier’s bout is on the undercard of two championship fights. Brett Oteri defends his Welterweight Championship against one of New England’s most seasoned fighters, Nuri Shakir. Oteri takes a 7-2 record in his 170-pound defense. The veteran Shakir has a 16-19 career mark.
In addition, Dwight Grant will battle Harley Beekman for the Interim Middleweight Championship. Grant is 2-1 and Beekman is 4-2 in the 185-pound class.
Also returning to the cage will be Matt Bessette. With a 6-2 career record, Bessette will take on Jeff Anderson at a weight of 150 pounds. Anderson is another veteran fighter, sporting an 11-6 career mark.
Among the other fights on the card, Darryl MarcAurele Jr. and Kevin Bradham will do battle at 170 pounds. Leroy Derricott will face Nate Andrews in a lightweight bout. Jason Ward takes on Robert Zapata in a middleweight fight.
