PORTSMOUTH — Third-grade students at Hathaway Elementary School celebrated Veterans Day early last week when they greeted members of Naval Station Newport.

Petty Officers 2nd Class James Bell and Richard Ebido, as well as Petty Officer 3rd Class Tanya Mercado, participated in a flag-folding ceremony which was also attended by Barbara McGann, interim school superintendent and a retired real admiral. Children took part in a lively question-and-answer period.

Students also learned about the history of Flanders Field and listened to a reading of “In Flanders Field,” by Canadian poet John McCrae.

The poem’s last line is, “We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders Field.” All students received a paper poppy and a copy of the poem.

Finally, they all received a postcard to write a thank-you to a Veteran they know.
