The School Committee Tuesday night voted unanimously to appoint Ms. Little as principal of Hathaway Elementary School, a job she’s served on an interim basis since Suzanne Madden left the district last year.

In selecting her, the committee was following the recommendation by Interim School Supt. Barbara McGann, who stated in a letter that Ms. Little was selected after a candidate search and lengthy personal interviews with two final candidates.

“Mrs. Little is eminently qualified to lead the Hathaway school and close the achievement gaps,” Ms. McGann wrote. “She has vast experience in both regular education and special education, having served as a special education teacher for an inclusion classroom and a team leader with oversight of individual education plans. Her in-depth knowledge of guidance counseling gives her a special ability of ensure the social and emotional needs of the Hathaway learning community are met.”

The superintendent also praised Ms. Little’s knowledge of curriculum to support high standards in the district. “This is an essential skill set for the leadership of the new Common Core standards and implementation of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers,” she wrote.

Ms. Little, said the superintendent, “has transformed the culture of Hathaway School in a very short period of time …”

School Committee Chairman David Croston said Ms. Little is a “fabulous” choice to lead Hathaway. “It gives balance to that school,” he said.

“I’m a little speechless,” said Ms. Little after her appointment. “I’m honored, I’m privileged. It’s a fabulous community and I look forward to moving it forward.”
