PORTSMOUTH — It was an emotional night at the annual Portsmouth High School band banquet at White’s of Westport Thursday.

Band director Ted Rausch choked up several times as he spoke about each graduate individually, prompting students to move a tissue box onto the podium.

The real tear-jerker, however, came when band members from the junior class took the stage to pay tribute to the seniors who were moving on.

Holding signs with hearts and letters that spelled out “We love our band seniors,” students sang “My Wish,” by Rascal Flatts to their friends:

My wish for you

Is that this life becomes all that you want it to

Your dreams stay big, your worries stay small

You never need to carry more than you can hold

And while you’re out there gettin’ where you’re gettin’ to

I hope you know somebody loves you

And wants the same things too

Yeah, this is my wish

And then, they turned their signs around to reveal the names of each senior band member.
