PORTSMOUTH — Members of the Portsmouth High School Marching Band made their annual visit to Hathaway and Melville elementary schools Friday morning, offering the younger students a private performance as well as some audience participation.
This year was special, however, as the band has adopted a “Star Wars” theme for its field show. Chewbacca, a Stormtrooper and other “Star Wars” characters greeted the kids with high-fives and hugs as the band played hits from the popular science fiction film.
The elementary students then broke off into small groups with individual band members, learning simple marching steps before parading around the playgrounds a few times.
Band director Ted Rausch said the elementary school visits are among his favorite performances of the year.

In other news, many band members will be dressed up in costume as they march in a community Halloween parade set for Thursday, Oct. 31, in Common Fence Point.
The parade steps off at 5:30 p.m. from the Common Fence Point Improvement Association (CFPIA) Hall, 933 Anthony Road.
The parade is being organized by Lauren McKone, a college sophomore and former band student. Some students from the middle school will also be marching in costume.
