Portsmouth cancels school Thursday, Friday


Portsmouth-High-SchoolPORTSMOUTH — Public school students here can sleep in Thursday and Friday. School has been cancelled for both days.

Assistant Superintendent Jeff Schoonover shared the news in a recorded phone message sent out to parents at about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Mr. Schoonover cited the impending winter storm’s anticipated precipitation and high winds during the commute period as the reason for the cancellation.

School is expected to resume Monday, Jan. 6.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm warning for all of Rhode Island from 4 a.m. Thursday until 10 a.m. Friday morning. The current prediction for snow accumulation in Rhode Island is 6 to 10 inches.

Portsmouth has instituted a parking band starting at midnight tonight, Jan. 1.
