The Barrington High School auditorium will be the site of a tribute to John Gray on Saturday, May 11.

The auditorium will be re-named in honor of the former long-time Barrington High School Principal who passed away last year. He served as principal for 29 years before retiring in 2009.

The auditorium was where many students and parents met Mr. Gray for the first time. The Barrington School Committee approved the tribute in October.

At that time, current high school principal Joe Hurley said a number of ideas had been pitched as possible tributes though the school’s improvement team felt the auditorium would be best. Mr. Gray is said to have had a love for the arts.

School Superintendent Michael Messore said Mr. Gray was a private person and any tribute should weigh what he would want.

“John was never the type of individual that wanted to draw much attention to himself. He always reflected on people that he worked with and the community he worked in,” Mr. Messore said.

“As we think about how we want to remember him, we should take that into consideration.”

Mr. Hurley said he had spoken with Mr. Gray’s wife, Cheryl, who agreed any tribute should reflect Mr. Gray’s interests.
