PROVIDENCE — The East Providence High School hockey club opened up its Division III championship series against Narragansett Thursday night, March 20, with a 4-1 victory over the top-seeded Mariners at Brown University’s Meehan Auditorium.
Josh Letendre netted a pair of goals for the third-seeded Townies, including one of their two on the evening with the man advantage. Andrew Gordon also scored a power-play tally for the locals, who lead the best-of-three finals 1-0.
Jared Estrella continued with his hot-hand, adding the fourth E.P. goal of the night and his fourth of the postseason. He also assisted on both of Letendre’s tallies.
Junior goalie Marc LaValley improved his record to 3-0 in the playoffs, making 24 saves in Game 1 Thursday.
“We played 45 minutes of lunch pail, Townie hockey,” said EPHS head coach Kevin Croke. “We played with a lot of grit and determination.”
Letendre got E.P. on the board late in the first period. Gordon followed with the first of three Townie tallies in the middle stanza, scoring his power-play goal at 5:27. The locals scored all of their goals in a roughly three-minute stretch of the second as Letendre followed with his other tally at 6:32 and Estrella scored at 8:32. Dylan Jardon’s goal with just over five minutes left in the period proved the only one of the night for Narragansett.
East Providence, which lost two of three outings to the Mariners during the regular season, go for the sweep and the title when the side return to Meehan Friday night, March 21, for Game 2. Puck drops at 6 p.m.
