East Providence High School wrestling hosts annual holiday gathering

EAST PROVIDENCE — As it does every winter between the Christmas and New Year holidays, the East Providence High School wrestling squad welcomed a host of opponents to the city Saturday, Dec. 28, for one of the largest matches of the regular season.

The Townies were slated for three matches, two crossovers against teams from the Division I-South ranks and one against a fellow D-I-North side. East Providence easily handled Middletown and Chariho from the South subgroup, but suffered a 54-21 loss to South Kingstown from the North.

Two Townies went unbeaten on the day. Freshman Christian Hussey won each of his three outings at 113 pounds as did senior co-captain Mario Peoples at 160.

East Providence saw its record move to 2-2 in the early going of the 2013-14 season, having also dropped a match to Bishop Hendricken to open the year back on Dec. 23.

“The kids wrestled well today. I was happy with what I saw,” said EPHS head coach Tom Galligan, in the midst of his 22nd season guiding the program.

The Townies take the rest of the school vacation week off, returning to action Wednesday, Jan. 8, for a tri-match against host Johnston and LaSalle at 5 p.m.
