CRANSTON — The visiting East Providence High School girls’ soccer club opened up its 2013 Division II regular season schedule in fine fashion Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 4, defeating Cranston East, 1-0, at Cranston Stadium.
Sydney Vilardi accounted for the lone goal of the contest, the freshman midfielder making an auspicious varsity debut by potting a penalty kick in the 67th minute of the second half. Sophomore keeper Devon Federowicz compiled the clean sheet in net for the Townies, making five saves.
“The team played well. We only have four seniors, so we’re a young team,” said second-year EPHS head coach Angelo Pizzi. “It was a total team effort today. I was very proud of our tenacity and resiliency.”
East Providence, which went just 2-11-1 in league games a year ago, looks to match last season’s win total already when the locals open up the home portion of their schedule Tuesday night, Sept. 10, at 7 o’clock against Johnston at Pierce Stadium.
