LINCOLN — The East Providence High School girls’ tennis team picked up its first victory of the season Friday afternoon, Sept. 13, a 6-1 decision over host Lincoln in a Division II match.
The Townies improved to 1-3 for the fall. The Lions dropped to 0-5. East Providence won three of four singles matches and all three doubles contests.
Freshman Tess Amore was a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 winner for the locals at No. 2 singles, her first varsity victory. Senior co-captain Melanie Gorman, won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 and classmate Liza Anderson won 6-0, 6-1 at four.
In doubles, the tandem of Jena Pothier-Hayley Sisto was a 6-4, 6-2 at the top spot. Michelle Phillips and Ava Mastrostefano rallied for a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2. Carolyn Conte-Lauren Vine also went the distance at No. 3, winning 6-1, 5-7, 10-8 in a super tiebreaker.
The Townies next play in Portsmouth Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 17, at 3:30 p.m.
In boys’ soccer, East Providence remained winless in the early going of the Division I season after the Townies fell to Cumberland, 5-1, on the road Friday.
E.P. slipped to 0-3-0 in the league. The Clippers improved to 1-1-1. The Townies next play host to Central Tuesday night, Sept. 17, at 7 o’clock at Pierce Stadium.Add to favorites
