PAWTUCKET — Jared Estrella netted a hat-trick as he and his East Providence High School hockey mates dispatched winless Woonsocket, 5-2, Saturday night, Jan. 4, at the Blackstone Valley Sports Center.

The junior scored the second, fourth and fifth of the Townies’ goals and assisted on the two others as the locals improved to 4-2-0 in the Division III ranks with the victory. The Villa Novans slumped to 0-6-0 on the season.

Estrella’s line mate on the evening, Josh Letendre, notched the first and third of the E.P. tallies, including what proved to be the game-winning goal just over 90 seconds into the third period. Estrella and Brynne Costa had the helpers on the score, a shot along the ice that beat Woonsocket goalie Devon Rivard (30 saves).

“It’s not the effort we were looking for,” said a slightly displeased EPHS head coach Kevin Croke. The Townies scored five times, but were sent to the penalty box almost twice that amount.

“We’re playing segmented hockey,” Coach Croke added. “We’re not getting any flow going and the penalties are a part of that.”

The Townies dominated puck most of the night, whether they were playing even strength or a man down, but had little to show for it through the opening 12 minutes.

East Providence finally got on the board just 27 seconds into the middle stanza on Letendre’s first, a rebound of a shot taken by Estrella at the end of a rush down the left wing.

Estrella made a similar move almost 10 minutes later, cutting off the left side then deeking Rivard with a shot between the goalie’s pads to make it 2-0 Townies.

The Villa Novans made things a bit interesting to start the third period when Sebastien Lanoie slapped a shot from the right face-off circle underneath the blocker of E.P. goalie Marc LaValley (10 saves). Just 31 seconds later, though, Letendre beat Rivard with a shot from the slot to put the locals back up a pair.

Estrella later added his two other tallies, both off wrist shots high between the circles. Letendre and Mike Allienello had the assists on Estrella’s last goal.

The Novans later scored their second goal on E.P. back-up netminder Dylan Bochichio (1 save) with just under four minutes remaining. The Townies out-shot Woonsocket, 35-13.

East Providence returns to action Friday night, Jan. 10, back at the BVSC to face Warwick Vets at 9:30.
