BARRINGTON — Though it was only the last day of August and the thick, muggy air certainly made it feel as if it were still the heart of the summer, the East Providence and Barrington High School football teams got a taste of the fall when the visiting Townies and Eagles conducted a preseason scrimmage Saturday morning.

Eastbayri.com photographer Alex Watrous chronicled the controlled practice, which was used by both teams to prepare for their respective Injury Fund outings later the following week as well as their regular season openers to follow.

East Providence and Barrington are each coming off sub-par seasons a year ago in the Division I ranks. The Townies finished a paltry 1-7 in league games while the Eagles were 3-5. Neither, obviously, made the playoffs.

The Townies head to Lincoln High Thursday night, Sept. 5, for their Injury Fund contest at 7 o’clock against Division II St. Raphael. The Eagles, as they have for the last several years, travel to Middletown’s Gaudet Middle School complex for their Injury Fund game against Division III Rogers Thursday at 6 p.m. Injury Fund games are 24 minutes or two quarters in length.

East Providence plays its first full 48-minute contest Friday, Sept. 13, at home under the lights at Pierce Stadium against Division II Woonsocket at 7 p.m. The Townies open up their D-I regular season two weeks later, Sept. 27, in Warwick against Bishop Hendricken.

Barrington, likewise, is home for its initial full fledged outing Sept. 13 against D-II Westerly also at 7 p.m. The Eagles begin their D-I regular season at Cranston Stadium Friday night, Sept. 20, against Cranston West at 7 o’clock.
