EAST PROVIDENCE — The 30th presentation of the “Manhattan at the Bay” musical event was a boon to St. Mary Academy-Bay View, the annual fundraiser netting the school six figures in donations.

Thanks to the support of the entire community, Manhattan at the Bay was a resounding success. The Academy exceeded its fundraising goal of $100,000 bringing in proceeds of over $106,000 with an additional $21,987 of in-kind donations. The proceeds will benefit every girl and young woman who attends Bay View Academy, providing support for all programs including the arts, athletics and academic initiatives.

For four days in late April, Bay View was transformed into a dynamic venue of food, drink and celebration. The showpiece of the weekend was the cabaret-style, musical production, “Tradition! A Tribute to Cabaret 30,” performed by students six times over the course of the weekend.

Since 1983, the dedicated team of Director, Christine D. Kavanagh (Barrington); Musical Director, Diane Gualtieri (Warwick) Percussionist, Karen Mellor (Barrington); and Choreographer Cynthia LoSasso (East Providence) have dreamed up the show, choreographed the dances and arranged and taught the music. This year’s show, which sold over $56,000 in tickets, featured over 100 singers and dancers from grades five through twelve.

Other fundraising events that took place over the weekend were Student Night, which included a student pizza party and open mic after the show, and Family Night ,which offered a family-style dinner and photographs taken by Your Red Carpet Event with characters from past Bay View performances. Also of note were “Taste of the Bay” and the Sunday Mass and Brunch. Reigning Miss Universe and Bay View alumna, Olivia Culpo, joined in the 30th anniversary celebration attending the “Taste of the Bay,” where she signed autographs and took photos with guests, and the Mass and Brunch.

“Taste of the Bay,” the gala event of this anniversary celebration, featured tempting tastes from local restaurants, cafes, and caterers, as well as samples of over 80 wines and beers organized by Clift’s Liquors (East Providence). From soup to short ribs and even chocolate covered bacon, these vendors put out their finest. Ellie’s Bakery and Gracie’s, Russell Morin Fine Catering, Tazza Café, Chapel Grille, Not Your Average Joe’s and many more generous vendors donated their time, food and drink in order to support the Academy. Bay View’s own student cooking club, “Chefs at the Bay” also whipped up tasty appetizers and desserts for guests to sample.

Donations of goods were made by Dunkin’ Donuts, J&L Landscaping and Eleven Forty Nine and the Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Jazz Band and the Deluxe Edition Band helped heat up the dance floor by donating their time and talents.
