Bay View, Barrington High girls’ cagers win Division I quarterfinal hoop games

PROVIDENCE — Seeding held form on the top side of the Division I girls’ basketball state championship tournament bracket Friday night, March 14, at Rhode Island College’s Walsh Gym as No. 1 Bay View and No. 4 Barrington High School won their respective quarterfinal round games.

Unbeaten at 18-0 during the regular season, Bay View defeated Smithfield by a 56-40 count. Dyamond Azakpo led the Bengals with 11 points while Dakota Grenier added 10. Nine of 11 players into the game scored for Bay View, including seven each for Raquel Pederzani and Paige Monk. Morgan Burke chipped in six.

The Bengals built a reasonably comfortable 29-21 margin at the end of the first half. Bay View then outscored the eighth-seeded Sentinels 27-19 over the final 16 minutes to set up a semifinal match-up with neighboring Barrington.

Maura Kelty paced the fourth-seeded Eagles with a game-best 20 points as Barrington defeated fifth-seeded South Kingstown, 42-36, in Friday’s first quarterfinal contest.

Kelty lit up the Rebels with 18 points in the first half, helping the Eagles also build a quite tidy 30-19 margin at intermission. South made things close in the final 16 minutes, outscoring the locals by five (17-12) but it wasn’t enough.

Sarah Middleton added 10 points for Barrington, which improved to 16-3 in league games to date. Grace Coutu chipped in five and Grecia Restituyo four.

Bay View and Barrington play in one semifinal encounter back at RIC Tuesday night, March 18, at 8 o’clock.
