The Barrington High School girls’ swimming team defeated Smithfield Tuesday while the boys’ squad suffered a close, season-opening loss.
The girls’ won eight of the meet’s 11 events for a final score of 66-28. Seniors Olivia August and Heidi Herchen helped win the 200 medley relay alongside freshmen Grace Bellamy and Elizabeth Ryan.
Bellamy added additional victories in the 200 individual medley and 100 meter breaststroke while Ryan added a second win in the 100 meter freestyle.
Junior Haley Ryan contributed with a win in the 200 meter freestyle and sophomore Emma Gurchiek took the 100 meter butterfly. Herchen, Gurchiek and Haley Ryan also teamed with freshman Alicia Vesey to win the 400 meter freestyle relay.
Head coach Sandy Gorham sad the girls’ squad has a lot of depth including Gurchiek, Herchen and Ryan. He added that Bellamy could be among the state’s top swimmers in the breast stroke and Vesey is a versatile athlete who can put up good times in different strokes and at different distances.
Overall, Gorham said he’s excited about what the girls’ team could accomplish this season.
Gorham also said that while the boys’ team lost 53-41 it was a tight match that could have swung in Barrington’s favor.
Barrington victories included senior Andres Solanot in the 200 meter freestyle and the 100 meter butterfly, junior MacKenzie DeWitt in the 500 meter freestyle and freshman Jack Fortin in the 100 meter breaststroke.
The boys’, however, were a touch away from taking a number of other events including Fortin in the 50 meter freestyle and senior Zachary Herchen in the 100 meter freestyle, both of whom came up short by one-tenth of a second. Luis Gozalo also placed second in the 200 individual medley despite shaving five seconds off his time.
“You can’t ask a kid to do anything better than that,” Gorham said.
The girls’ now stand at 2-0 in D-III this year. The team previously defeated St. Mary Academy Bay View 54-40 on Dec. 13. The boys fall to 0-1 in D-I.
