Barrington High School indoor track teams finish fourth and sixth at state meet

The Barrington Track and Field team competed at the Rhode Island State Championship on Saturday, running against all of the best runners from across the state.

The Girls came in fourth place, scoring 23 points, finishing one point behind third place Hope High School. La Salle Academy and Classical High School tied for the State Championship, with 89 points each.

Junior Abby Livingston took second in the 600 meters, running a time of 1 minute and 36 seconds and grabbing eight points for the Eagles. Other individual scorers for Barrington included junior Megan Verner-Crist, who got sixth in the 1500 meters, and Shenelle Teixeira, who took fourth in the 55 meter hurdles. The 4×800 meter relay team of Livingston, Verner-Crist, junior Julianna Portelli, and freshman Julia Zitzmann, despite finishing second to La Salle by two seconds to run a 9:31, broke the previous meet record of 9:34 set by La Salle last year.

Other Girls who represented Barrington included freshman Brianna Gausland in the 55 meter dash; junior Madison Smith in the 55 meter hurdles; Portelli in the 1000 and 1500 meters; the 4×200 meter relay team of Teixeira, Smith, Gausland, and sophomore Sarah Uri; and the 4×400 meter team of Livingston, Teixeira, Gausland, and sophomore Bella Gagliano.

The Boys team finished sixth with 29 points, two points behind fifth place La Salle. Bishop Hendricken took home the state title with a 75 point performance.

The Eagles’ throwers, senior Charlie Ionata and sophomore Adam Kelly, finished 1-2 in the weight throw, securing 18 points for Barrington. Ionata also grabbed a fourth place finish in the shot put to take home another four points.

Senior Tom Barry took third place in the 1000 meters, running a 2:35. Fellow senior Connor Royley grabbed another point for Barrington in the 3000 meters, running a 9:05.

Other individual competitors for the Eagles included junior Max Caro in the 55 meter dash and high jump; Royley in the 1000 meters; senior Will Casezza in the 3000 and 1000 meters; Kelly in the shot put; the 4×800 meter relay team of senior Christian Egglin and sophomores Lucas Bledsoe, Max Guerrierri, and Sam Somera; and the 4×400 meter team of Barry, Egglin, senior Alex Richardson, and freshman Tom Richardson.

Qualifiers for the New England Interscholastic Championship on the Girls side include Livingston in the 600 meters, Verner-Crist in the 1500, Teixeira in the 55m hurdles, and the 4×800 meter relay team. The Boys team will be represented by Ionata and Kelly in the weight throw, Ionata in the shot put, Barry in the 600 meters, and Royley in the 3000. The New England Championship will take place Saturday, March 2nd, at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
