The Barrington High School girls’ cross country team’s quest for a bid to nationals ended in disappointment.

Last Saturday, Nov. 24, the squad finished third in the Nike Cross National Northeast Qualifier. The top two teams automatically earned a trip to Nike Nationals in Oregon this weekend while Barrington’s finish left them eligible for a wildcard spot.

On Sunday, the team learned it had not been selected and the season was over.

Barrington head coach Annmarie Marino said it was frustrating to come so close to the goal without reaching it. The team has had its sights set on nationals since the summer.

Ms. Marino said the team was hit by an injury bug heading into the regional race and what makes the result an especially tough pill to swallow is the fact that Barrington’s times would have been good enough to win regionals in recent years.

“We were in a good year,” Ms. Marino said.

The future, however, couldn’t be brighter for the team. State champ Emma McMillan, a freshman, finished seventh at regionals while junior Abigail Livingston finished 25th.

The team will also lose only two of its senior runners to graduation, both of whom were praised by Ms. Marino. She said senior Alice Burgess was a “vibrant” teammate who kept the team a close knit bunch over the last four years while Fiona Paine was a hard worker who set a good example for young runners.

Ms. Marino also said that overall, both of the out-going co-captains are “unbelievable athletes.”

Many of the runners will now head to the winter indoor track season and in a few months, the spring outdoor track season. Ms. Marino said the team will start formal preparations for the 2013 campaign when school breaks in June.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Ms. Marino said.

“It just ended and I can’t wait for it to start.”
