The Rhode Island Division I boys’ soccer title is back in Barrington.

The Barrington High School Eagles defeated LaSalle Academy 3-2 in the state championship match Saturday afternoon at Rhode Island College. The victory marks Barrington’s third state crown in the last five years and is a capstone on an undefeated season.

Barrington never trailed LaSalle and didn’t wait long to take a lead. Junior midfielder Denali Sexton lit up the scoreboard less than one minute into regulation. He scored on a header courtesy of a free kick assist from senior striker Matthew Roberts.

Barrington widened its lead to two about six minutes later on Sexton’s second goal. The header was setup by a beautiful pass off the foot of junior midfielder Charles Masterson.

Before the half, however, LaSalle narrowed the gap to one and about five minutes into the second half knotted the game at two.

But Barrington didn’t wait long to seize the lead for good. Roberts scored the game’s final goal off a free kick from roughly 30 yards out and less than two minutes after LaSalle tied the game.

Roberts was named the game’s MVP. He was also one of four Barrington players named to the All Tournament Team alongside Sexton, senior goal keeper Andrew Jones and junior midfielder Jozef Jennings.
