The Barrington High School boys’ hockey team defeated Mt. Hope 6-3 Wednesday night in the 11th annual J.P. Medeiros Jr. Memorial Cup.
The Eagles’ offensive showing was a departure from what had been a sluggish start to the season. Junior forward Joseph Lombardi contributed points for Barrington as did senior forward John Kraunelis.
The annual game is named in honor of Mr. Medeiros, a Mt. Hope graduate who was killed in a car crash while attending Quinnipiac University. Proceeds from the game benefit a scholarship fund in Mr. Medeiros’ memory.
Barrington’s win brings the overall series record to 6-5 in favor of the Eagles.
The win is also Barrington’s second in a row after the Eagles defeated Cumberland 4-2 in the Burrillville Winter Classic on Monday, Dec. 31.
This week’s victories mark the end of a five-game losing skid for Barrington in which opponents outscored the Eagles 14-3.
The road ahead, however, doesn’t get any easier. Barrington plays Bishop Hendricken on Friday, Jan. 4 and Friday Jan. 11 followed by a game against Mt. St. Charles on Wednesday, Jan. 16.
“We’ve got some tough teams ahead of us,” said head coach Derek Borek.
“We’re looking to play those teams tough and maybe squeeze out a win.”
