The Barrington High School boys’ hockey team lost a tough battle to Burrillville last Monday afternoon, 3-2 in overtime, at the Portsmouth Abbey Hockey Rink.

The Eagles and Broncos were less than 30 seconds away from a 2-2 tie when Burrillville forward Drew Buxton won the game, beating Barrington goalie Andrew Gailbraith with only 27 seconds remaining in overtime. Forward Tom Libby assisted on the goal.

The first period was a defensive contest, until Burrillville opened the scoring when defender Mitch Lafond scored after he shot the puck into the Barrington crease and it deflected off an Eagle skate and into the goal. The Broncos led at the first intermission 1-0.

The Eagles stormed back in the second, unleashing a flurry of 15 second period shots on Burrillville goalie Kyle Wilkinson, ultimately tying the game when junior forward Brett Fay snapped a shot past Wilkinson with 3 minutes and 56 seconds left in the period.

Senior forward Nick Vastano and junior defender Charlie Vanier assisted on the goal.

The third period proved to be another nail biter, as Barrington took its first lead of the game on a power play goal by sophomore defender Derek Carlson 8:50 into the final frame. Fay and Vastano each grabbed another point with assists on the go ahead goal by Carlson.

The lead didn’t last though, as less than 12 seconds later, Burrillville forward Chad Stone beat Gailbraith with a high wrist shot off a pass from Lafond to tie the game at 2.

The final 5:58 saw both goalie failing to blink, as shots on both sides were turned away again and again to end regulation without a victor.

The Eagles out shot the Broncos, 33-23, showing great fight even though they ultimately fell in overtime. Fay had a goal and an assist for Barrington, while Vastano had two assists, Carlson added a goal, and Vanier had an assist to go along with Gailbraith’s 21 saves on the afternoon.

The loss drops the Eagles to 4-12 on the season, while the Broncos move up to 5-8-1. Barrington next plays Tuesday at 4:45 p.m. against Mount St. Charles at the Adelard Arena in Woonsocket, while Burrillville will take on Cranston West on Wednesday.
