Barrington bests the rest for girls’ Eastern Division outdoor track and field title

BARRINGTON ─ After a five-day delay due to weather, the Eastern Division Championship girls’ outdoor track and field championship meet, featuring 10 teams from around the East Bay, went off without a hitch Monday, May 13, at Barrington High School’s Victory Field.

The host Eagles took the overall title with 166.33 points, while Portsmouth finished second with 119, Mt. Hope came in third with 99.83 and East Providence finished fourth with 76.33.

The meet started off with a solid win in the 4×800 meter relay by Barrington, led by Julianna Portelli, Fiona Paine, Julia Zitzmann, and Lusine Gazeryan, in a time of 10 minutes, 17 seconds. Mt. Hope’s team of Hazel Baldwin-Kress, Aly Dion, Katarina Hayden, and Karina Tavares finished second, while Portsmouth’s Emily Ciccoa, Raegan Holland, Ally Merrill, and Ana Delgado took third.

The next relay, the 4×100, was taken in a shootout by Portsmouth, who just edged out East Providence by less than a quarter of a second, taking the win in 52.2 seconds. The Patriots’ victory was led by Jessica Kaufman, Tyana Coatney, Haley Yaw, and Greta Scott.

Mt. Hope’s Kylie McPherson took the victory in the 100 meter hurdles, running a time of 16.1 seconds. Barrington’s Maddie Smith and Shenelle Teixeira finished second and third, both in 16.2 seconds, while Portsmouth’s Molly Wynegar and Kaufman took fifth and sixth.

The 100 meter dash saw East Providence’s first victory of the day, with Sierra Cunningham leaning past Portsmouth’s Coatney to win in 13 seconds, and Mt. Hope’s Megan Vento taking third .2 seconds behind. East Providence swept fourth through sixth place with Alexis Thompson, Rachael Finn, and Tayla Carnevale grabbing seven more points for the Townies.

The 1,500 meter run was dominated by the Barrington duo of Emma McMillan and Megan Verner-Crist, who finished first and second in times of 4:51 and 4:54, respectively. Mt. Hope’s Tavares took fourth in 5:19, while East Providence’s Yuliandra Henriquez finished fifth in 5:25.

Barrington junior Abby Livingston renewed her  rivalry with Bay View’s Erica Johnson in the 400 meters, the two running neck and neck before Johnson pulled away on the final straightaway for the win, giving the Livingston second place overall. The two previously battled indoors at the 600 meters, finishing 1-2 in the Class B Championship, as well as the R.I. State Meet. Portsmouth’s Scott and Haley Yaw finished third and sixth, Mt. Hope’s Nicole Rusin took fourth, and East Providence’s Brynne Costa finished fifth.

Barrington’s Teixeira avenged her third place in the 100 meter hurdles with a dominant win in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 46.8 seconds, beating Mt. Hope’s McPherson by over a second. Portsmouth’s Kaufman took third, Barrington’s Smith grabbed fifth, and East Providence’s Angela Leonardo took sixth.

In the 200 meters, East Providence’s Cunningham backed up her earlier win with another victory, running a dash of 27.1. Portsmouth’s Scott and Coatney took second and fifth in the race, Mt. Hope’s Vento grabbed third, and East Providence’s Thompson finished sixth.

The 800 meters saw more dominance from the Barrington distance runners, with Verner-Crist taking the overall title in 2:23, with teammates McMillan and Zitzmann finishing third and sixth, respectively. East Providence’s Tarissa Jones took fifth in a time of 2:32.

Mt. Hope’s Karina Tavares continued her incredible freshman season with a strong win in the 3000 meters, beating Barrington’s Portelli by two seconds. Barrington’s Alice Burgess, Paine, and Laura Marshall grabbed third, fourth, and sixth, while Mt. Hope’s Heyden took fifth.

In the final track race, Mt. Hope capped off an impressive day with a huge win in the 4×400 meter relay, when the team of Baldwin-Kress, McPherson, Rusin, and Vento finished in 4:16, a full 13 seconds better than the second place finish of Portsmouth. Barrington took third, two seconds behind the Patriots, and East Providence finished fourth.

In the throwing events, Portsmouth’s Abby Cousens won the Discus and Hammer throw, with Barrington’s Grace Restituyo taking second in each. Portsmouth’s Ashley McMillian finished second in Javelin, and East Providence’s Kaitlyn Bellamy and Caitlyn Lamb took fourth and fifth. Mt. Hope’s Marissa Silva finished fourth in Discus, while East Providence’ Lamb took fifth. In the Hammer, Portsmouth’s Megan Steen finished fourth, Barrington’s Olivia Casale took fifth, and East Providence’s Alexis Cardoso finished sixth.

Mt. Hope took first and second in the high jump, with Emma Pattie jumping five feet and McPherson clearing 4’9”. East Providence’s Genesis DeCouto, Barrington’s Teixeira, and Mt. Hope’s Lucy Spence all tied for fourth, each jumping 4’5”. Pole Vault was dominated by Portsmouth, with Wynegar, Cousens, and Rachel Chavous taking first, third, and fourth, all clearing 7’0”. Barrington’s Sarah Middleton and Meghan Johns grabbed second and fifth place, while Mt. Hope’s Spence tied for sixth.

Portsmouth’s Scott won the Long Jump with a jump of 16’02.75”. Barrington’s Middleton and Smith took second and fourth, East Providence’s Bellamy grabbed third, and Mt. Hope’s Spence finished sixth. Middleton finished strong with a win in the triple jump with a jump of 31’08.5”, with Bellamy taking second, Barrington’s Oana Groza grabbing third, Spence taking fourth, and East Providence’s Carnevale finishing fifth.

The track teams now gear up for the next set of championship meets, the Class Championships, which will take place on Saturday, May 18. Barrington and East Providence will compete in the Class A Championship, hosted by Cumberland High School, and Mt. Hope and Portsmouth will take part in the Class B Championship, in which they will travel to Westerly.
