Rx records missing from Barrington Rite Aid

A few boxes containing prescription records for roughly 2,000 individuals are missing from the Rite Aid on County Road in Barrington.

According to a statement issued Thursday afternoon, it was learned the boxes were missing during a review of the stores’ records on Feb. 8. An “exhaustive search” of the store was conducted though the boxes were not found.

The release did not state exactly how many customers were affected though Rite Aid spokeswoman Ashley Flowers said it’s about 2,000.

An investigation was also reportedly conducted into the incident though Ms. Flowers said it was “inconclusive” as to how the files were lost. Ms. Flowers said local police were not notified of the incident because there was no evidence of any criminal activity or act associated with the matter.

“It is important to note that the hard copy prescriptions missing from Rite Aid Store No. 10217 do not contain any credit card numbers or social security numbers,” reads the notice, which was issued in compliance with the Federal Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act.

“There is no evidence to support that any customer information has been misused.”

As a precaution, reads the notice, Rite Aid has engaged risk consulting company Kroll Inc. to alert impacted customers with a notification letter containing information about proactive measures that have been taken to guard against identity theft.

Customers who do not receive a notification letter, reads the notice, were “likely not affected.”

No files from any other Rite Aid store were involved.

“Patient privacy is a top priority for Rite Aid and there are strict protocols to secure records while they reside in our stores as well as when they are destroyed,” reads the notification.

“Rite Aid deeply regrets that this incident occurred and apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused its customers.”
