The Very Rev. W. Nicholas Knisely fields questions from the media at St. Mary’s Church on East Main Road in Portsmouth on Friday. He was ordained as bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island at St. George’s in Middletown on Saturday.

The event took place in the church’s new parish house.

Also there for the occasion were retiring Rhode Island Bishop Geralyn Wolf, and Presiding Bishop Jefferts Schori, the chief pastor of the Episcopal Church in the United States. Bishop Wolf served as bishop of the Rhode Island Diocese since 1996.

Bishop Knisely, formerly dean of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Phoenix, Ariz., was elected Rhode Island’s 13th bishop at a special electing convention June 2. He was elected on the first ballot.

The ordination ceremony was held Saturday, Nov. 17, at St. George’s School in Middletown, followed by a reception.
