JOHNSTON — For Rhode Island residents deep frying their turkeys this Thanksgiving, the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC) provides the perfect recycling service for that leftover waste – a cooking oil collection that recycles and converts the waste into alternative, sustainable fuel.
Resource Recovery urges residents to recycle Thanksgiving cooking oil
RIRRC provides this cooking oil collection service year-round, but many residents find the collection most helpful following the Thanksgiving holiday, when they are left with an abundance of corn, vegetable and olive oil (and trace amounts of animal fat) from their deep frying holiday endeavors. Cooking oil should never be poured down the drain as it can damage your home’s plumbing and your neighborhood’s sewer system. While it is non-hazardous and safe for disposal in the trash when placed in a watertight container, recycling cooking oil can help produce a much needed renewable fuel source right here in Rhode Island.
“We encourage Rhode Island residents to take advantage of our cooking oil collection service, not only during the holidays but year-round,” said Sarah Kite, Director of Recycling Services at RIRRC. “Residents will be proud to know that their cooking oil waste will be repurposed by Newport Biodiesel, a local company, to produce a clean-burning and sustainable fuel used throughout the region.”
Access to the cooking oil collection is available at the small vehicle disposal area located at the Central Landfill in Johnston. Customers can simply pour their cooking oil into one of the two 55-gallon drums stationed at the facility’s small vehicle disposal area during normal operating hours; Newport Biodiesel then collects the full drums and drops off empty ones.
RIRRC is open Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and on Saturdays from 6:00 a.m. to noon, but will be closed on Thanksgiving Day.
