IMG_4176PORTSMOUTH — Rescue workers have not yet found any evidence that someone jumped from the Mt. Hope Bridge Saturday evening.

On Sunday morning, Capt. Steve Lynch of the Portsmouth Fire Department said a report from an onlooker that someone may have jumped from the span may have been unfounded.

“Someone was driving over the bridge and they said they might have seen someone leaning over,” he said.

A search ensued in which Portsmouth was joined by the U.S. Coast Guard, Tiverton, Bristol and the Narragansett Bay Marine Task Force, but nothing was found.

At about 7 pm., Portsmouth called off its search after “a couple of hours” due to darkness, he said, although the Coast Guard continued looking.

“We haven’t heard anything further or received any missing person reports,” said Capt. Lynch. “We haven’t gone back out to look.”

Windsurfer rescued

In a separate incident Saturday afternoon, the Fire Department rescued a windsurfer off McCorrie Point.

“We picked up a windsurfer who was having mechanical problems,” said Capt. Lynch, adding that the incident took place around 2 or 3 p.m. Saturday and that the person was fine.
